About me

About this site, about me and some other words that popped into my head.

About me
On high moorland paths in search of old stones

"You're only ever partway in a room."

This rather ambiguous comment was said about me by an ex, so long ago I don't remember their face. I do remember the comment, largely because it's true. I'm there and not there: my physical self is in one space while my mind roams freely among such topics as "Will I ever get to see a dinosaur footprint?" and "I haven't been to Rollright for a while, I should take the long way round" and "I wonder if the library has a copy of that book on the Black Death I heard about?"

Once, in an interview, I got sidetracked into thinking about how miraculous elephants are and couldn't answer any questions thereafter.

Luckily, I have floundered my way into a career where that kind of wandering mind is tolerated. To have it appreciated would be too much. And here I find myself, on the cusp of a Grand Age (mine, not humanity's), still thinking about old stones, old bones and old books.

If you can't find me at my desk, I'm probably at the allotment trying to stem the twin tides of bindweed and slugs. I am never winning at this. Or hiding somewhere trying to finish the book in my hand. I often win at this.

I am only ever partway in a photo too...

About this site

Old Stones is an independent publication launched in February 2026 by me, Tonia. If you subscribe today, you'll get full access to the website as well as email newsletters about new content when it's available. You also receive my undying gratitude for merely existing as a reader of this blog. Your subscription allows me to write Old Stones for readers rather than simply typing into an echoing crevasse of disinterest. Thank you!

Access all areas

By signing up, you'll get access to the full archive of everything that's been published before and everything that's still to come. Your very own private library. God, aren't libraries amazing? Only just a little less amazing than those fabulous second hand bookshops where things are filed according to the owner's disposition and inclination on any given day. You know the sort! The ones where time slips down the wrong trouser leg and you meet yourself coming out from a previously unseen corner.

One day, all this will be mine...
